6th Research Scholars' Day, 2015

Research Scholars' Day

The School of Information Technology is going to celebrate the 6th Research Scholars' Day on January 10, 2015. The research scholar's day is an annual event celebrated by the Research scholars and faculty members of School of Information Technology. The research scholars mainly constitute of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Technology and Master of Science (by research) students. On this day, research scholars showcase their research work by conducting various activities such as oral and poster presentations. The program is attended by peers of the participating students as well as faculty, staff, family members of the presenters and the public. This event serves a platform for students and faculty members to interact, share and discuss ideas in various domains.

This occassion will be graced by the presence of Dr. Dipti Prasad Mukherjee, Professor of the Electronics and Communication Sciences Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He will be delivering a lecture on Recognizing Human Actions Seen in a Video.

An abstract of the talk is as follows.

Human actions seen in a video can be represented as a collection of image features. These features can be filtered and clustered to define a set of key poses. These key poses can characterize actions like running, walking, jumping etc. Learning key poses using machine learning tools like SVM can identify these actions in an unseen video. In this talk, we will discuss this key pose based action recognition techniques.

A brief biography of Dr. Dipti Prasad Mukherjee:

Dipti Prasad Mukherjee is the Professor of the Electronics and Communication Sciences Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. His primary teaching and research interest is in Computer Vision, Image Processing and Computer Graphics. He has written books on Computer Graphics and has published more than hundred peer-reviewed research papers.

He has held visiting faculty positions at the Oklahoma State University , University of Virginia and Alcorn State University , USA, the University of Alberta, Canada. He was invited speaker at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University , China, University of Nebraska Omaha, USA and at the HCI International, Crete, Greece. Prior to this, Dr. Mukherjee is the recipient of the pre-doctoral UNDP fellowship at the Robotics Research Group, University of Oxford, U.K., and the UNESCO-CIMPA fellowship to INRIA, France and to ICTP Italy. In 2010, he has received Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Invitation fellowship to the Department of Radiology, Osaka University , Japan.

Besides receiving research funding from several Government Agencies, he is the investigator of the funded research projects from Qualcomm, TCS and Tata Steel in the field of image processing and computer vision.

Currently, he is the associate editor of the prestigious journal IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and Sadhana, the journal of Indian Academy of Sciences.

A detail of the program is provided below. All are invited to participate.

Message from Head of the Department

Researchers have a tendency to completely focus on their own work. As a result, they become oblivious of the work being attempted by others. However, extrospection can yield rich dividends and help generate new ideas, besides development of awareness of what other researchers in the school are doing. The research scholar day will also include a talk by an eminent researcher. Let us make the best use of the occasion.
